This is an all malt brew using 2-row pale ale malt. A small amount of crystal malt is used to give the beer it’s deep golden colour and also contributes some light toffee notes to the flavour.
Whole hops are added in two stages. Our bittering hops are added at the beginning of the boil and provide a medium level of bitterness resulting in a subtle hop ‘bite’. Aroma hops are added 10 minutes before the end of the boil to provide a very light spicy aroma. Overall it has a clean hop finish.
California ale yeast (known for its clean flavours and balance) is used and fermentation is carried out at lower than usual temperatures resulting in a clean crisp finish.
The beer is conditioned at low temperature for a minimum of 21 days allowing the yeast to slowly continue its work.at
This style of beer was first brewed in the Californian gold rush days to slake the thirst of miners. Originally known as Steam Beer it is one of the few styles native to North America. The term ‘steam beer’ has since been trademarked by a brewing company and so the style is now known as California Common.
This is a fascinating style which originated in the mid to late 1800’s where a lack of refrigeration meant that lager beer was fermented at high temperatures resulting in a distinct flavour profile.
We have brewed this beer using our own modern interpretation of the original techniques used.
The beer is handcrafted in small batches with the very best of ingredients. 100% natural with no artificial flavours or preservatives.
Colour: Deep Golden
Aroma: Clean, slightly woody, slight hints of spice.
Flavour: Initial malt sweetness balanced by bitterness, light toffee notes followed by a lingering secondary bitterness hit that is refreshing rather than overwhelming.
